Passive PoE vs Active PoE

Active PoE follows IEEE standards and automatically negotiates power delivery with the connected device. It is safer and is recommended for most enterprise access points, IP cameras, and network infrastructure equipment.

Passive PoE continuously sends power through the Ethernet cable regardless of whether the connected device supports it. It is commonly used with certain wireless ISP radios and outdoor networking equipment, but it should only be used when the device explicitly supports passive PoE.

Selecting a PoE Injector for IP Cameras

IP cameras have varying power requirements depending on their features. A fixed indoor camera may operate on standard 802.3af PoE, while a PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) camera with motors, infrared illumination, and heaters may require PoE+ or PoE++.

For surveillance deployments, choose an injector that provides stable, continuous power output, surge and lightning protection for outdoor cameras, Gigabit connectivity for high-resolution video streams, and compatibility with the camera manufacturer’s PoE specifications. This helps prevent video interruptions and ensures reliable 24/7 surveillance operation.

Outdoor Wireless Devices Need Extra Attention

Outdoor wireless bridges, CPE devices, and point-to-point radios often have unique power requirements. Many wireless ISP devices use 24V passive PoE, while newer enterprise outdoor radios may support 48V active PoE.

For outdoor deployments, also consider weather-resistant enclosures, Ethernet surge protection, long cable runs and voltage drop, and proper grounding and lightning protection. For standard Ethernet-based PoE deployments, the recommended cable length is generally up to 100 meters (328 feet) for Cat5e or Cat6 cabling. Longer distances may require PoE extenders, fiber uplinks, or additional powered network equipment to maintain reliable power and data transmission.
